Cookies Policy

1. What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are placed on your computer/device by websites that you visit. They are widely used in order to make websites function properly or work more efficiently, as well as to provide information to website owners. Internet browsers accept cookies by default, but browsers can be set to refuse cookies. Unless you have adjusted your browser setting to refuse cookies, our system will issue cookies as soon as you visit our website.

2. To help you better understand cookies, we define the different ways in which cookies are used:

* Essential Cookies: These cookies are required for the operation of the website. Without these cookies, the website will not function properly.

* Session Cookies: Session Cookies are temporary cookie files that are deleted when you close your browser. When you restart your browser and return to the website that created the cookie, the website will treat you as a new visitor.

* Functionality/persistent cookies: These cookies are designed to improve the functionality of the site and personalize your experience, such as selecting a layout or remembering login details. These cookies allow us to provide you with content tailored to your interests and save you the time of having to re-register or re-enter information when you visit the site or attempt to access certain member-only areas.

* Analytical Cookies: These cookies allow us to monitor the behavioural activity of our users but do not collect any personal information about you. We use these cookies to help us improve the way our website works for you. The type of information collected includes how many visitors visited the website or viewed the pages.

3. How and why does the Association use cookies?

The Association uses cookies to meet the basic requirements of the website. The data collected from cookies is used to track visitors' use of the website, compile statistical reports on website activity, store preferences, and identify members' return login details. This information helps us improve the user experience. We will not use any of this data to identify you personally. This data is only used to monitor and improve the Association's website.

4. Our cookies (first-party cookies), we currently use:

* personalisationGroupsPagesViewed (expires after 3 months)
* personalisationGroupsNumberOfVisitsSessionStarted (expires when the browser is closed)
* personalisationGroupsNumberOfVisits (expires after 3 months)

These cookies are used by Umbraco (an open source content management system platform) to collect basic user information related to their visit, such as pages viewed, number of visits, mode usage, etc.

* yourAuthCookie (expires when the browser is closed):  This cookie allows you to stay logged in so that you don't have to re-enter your login information multiple times when you visit the website. It may identify you as a single user as you move between pages, but does not contain any personally identifiable information. This cookie expires when the browser is closed.

* __RequestVerificationToken  (expires when the browser is closed):  This cookie helps prevent cross-site request forgery (CSRF). CSRF occurs when a user trusted by a web application sends unauthorized commands. Malicious websites can transmit such commands in a variety of ways; for example, specially crafted image tags, hidden forms, and JavaScript XMLHttpRequests can all run without the user's knowledge. This cookie expires when you close your browser.

* Cookieconsent (expires after one year):  Used to remember that the user has accepted the cookie consent popup.

 5. Third-party cookies

 * Google Analytics:  The Association uses this service to provide information about the use of the Association's website, compile statistical reports on website activity; and website navigation (which pages or sections are visited most, which articles are read most, etc.) to ensure that our service is as interesting and user-friendly as possible. You can opt-out of Google Analytics cookies.

* Social Media:  Our website contains links to Facebook, Twitter and other similar social media sites that allow you to share content from our website with others via social media. To provide this service we link to a third party website called AddThis. You can opt-out of addthis.com cookies.

* HotJar:  Some of our websites also use HotJar cookies, which track where users scroll on a page and help us determine where content could be more appropriately placed to improve your user experience. You can choose to disable the HotJar service.

* DoubleClick:   DoubleClick uses cookies to improve the advertising displayed on the Association's website. Some common uses include targeting ads based on content relevant to the user, improving campaign performance reporting, and avoiding showing ads that the user has already seen. You can disable this cookie through the settings on your browser.

* Disqus:  We use the Disqus commenting system on our web pages, allowing you to post comments and participate in discussions about the topics of our site.

A microsite is created to support another service and is separate from the main Society website and has its own separate URL. For example, the Aerospace Careers website hosted by KD Web will have its own cookie policy. The Society has a number of other microsites which are hosted on different domains to the main website and content on the microsites may be provided by other professional organisations which have their own cookie policies. The Society's microsites include: No.4 Hamilton Place , Royal Aeronautical Society Heritage Collection , Aerospace Careers ; RAeS Students , RAeS MyCareer Path , Aerospace Society Jobs , ALTA Mentoring

7. Restrict or delete cookies

By default, all cookies on this website are active to provide the best user experience. Please note that turning off cookies in your browser will affect the core functionality of the site and social sharing options will not be available. Remember, if you use different computers in different locations, you need to ensure that each browser is adjusted to suit your cookie preferences.

If you wish to disable or delete selected cookies, your web browser may provide the option to do this through the 'Help' menu option. For useful resources on cookies, visit AboutCookies.org or allaboutcookies.org which provides good general advice on how to manage cookies on your computer.
