Royal Aeronautical Society releases Low Altitude Economy (AAM) 2024 safety white paper

The Royal Aeronautical Society has published a ground-breaking report on how electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft will shape the future of aviation safety. The report uses a fresh and innovative approach, presenting what-if scenarios to anticipate future challenges, incorporating long-term lessons from traditional aviation, and recommending strategies to enhance safety in this rapidly evolving sector.

The importance and timeliness of this “forward-looking” report in anticipating future safety challenges cannot be underestimated, and this is the first time that the safety of future eVTOLs has been explored in this way. The established aerospace industry has a deep-rooted DNA in airworthiness and safety, and should continue to pass this safety culture on to the emerging low-altitude economy, the Future Air Mobility (AAM) sector, for the benefit of all. Through this groundbreaking report, analyzing plausible and realistic accident scenarios developed by a global group of experts, we aim to stimulate discussion, guide debate, and ultimately help ensure that the introduction of AAM is as safe as possible.

Krisha Khan, President of the Royal Aeronautical Society, said:

“Innovations in electrification, digitalization and automation in aviation offer new opportunities to connect people, transport goods and provide services in crowded and remote areas in a more sustainable and efficient way. To fully realize these social and economic benefits, safety must always be the top priority. The Royal Aeronautical Society is committed to advancing flight safety. This report not only emphasizes the importance of industry-led collaboration and continuous improvement in safety practices, but also introduces a predictive safety management approach, including "ex ante analysis", to anticipate and mitigate potential risks, leading the aviation industry towards a safer future.”
